During weld visual inspection, the inspector visually examines the weld and its surrounding areas to identify any visible defects or anomalies as per following commonly used codes and standards: CSA 178.1, CSAW59, CSA Z662 ASME B31.1, ASME B31.3, ASME Sec V, ASME Sec IX, ASME Sec VIII Div 1&2, API codes and Recommended Practices.

This inspection uses appropriate lighting, tools, and techniques to ensure a thorough examination. The CWB inspector examines various aspects of the weld, including weld size, shape, geometry, the weld bead’s appearance, weld profile, and any reinforcement or penetration. CWB inspectors also assess the continuity of the weld, looking for signs of weld underfill, incomplete penetration, or excessive weld reinforcement.

 Furthermore, the inspector checks for surface discontinuities such as cracks, porosity, undercutting, spatter, and other defects that can affect the integrity and strength of the weld. They also examine the weld for proper alignment, fit-up, and the presence of any distortion or warpage. In addition to visual observation, the inspector may use magnifying lenses, measuring instruments, and gauges to assess the weld’s dimensions, angles, and other critical parameters.

The results of the weld visual inspection are recorded in a detailed inspection report, documenting the findings, any identified defects, and recommendations for repair or further evaluation.
